News: CHER RIDES SHOTGUN AT HELMET HEARING |
|
By Amy Argetsinger and Roxanne Roberts Friday, June 16, 2006
So many people to thank for attending yesterday's House Armed Services subcommittee meeting, but just one with a single name: Ladies and gentlemen, Grammy- and Oscar-winning performer Cher !
Chairman Curt Weldon (R-Pa.) was clearly stirred to find her in the room. "It's especially poignant because Sonny Bono and his wife have been members of this committee," he said, then added: "As you all know, Sonny died of a head injury." Then he praised the eulogy Cher delivered at Sonny's funeral: "I can tell you today it was perhaps the most touching story." And again, "It's really a great honor with Cher here."

Entertainer Attends Hearing on Upgraded Helmets But Doesn't Testify
By CLAYTON SANDELL and JENNIFER DUCK
June 15, 2006 — She didn't say or sing a word, yet Cher was still center stage on Capitol Hill today.
The entertainer came to help convince lawmakers to provide U.S. troops with upgraded helmets that can protect against explosions and other concussive impacts to the head.
Cher didn't speak, but several members of the House Armed Services committee made note of her presence. Rep. Steve Israel, D-N.Y., called her appearance "extremely important."

| News: C-SPAN & CHER: SINGER TOUTS 'OPERATION HELMET' |
|
At first glance it seemed an odd combination: Cher appearing on C-SPAN's Washington Journal call-in show this morning to talk about Operation Helmet.
That initiative - a non-profit effort to send helmet "upgrades" to U.S. forces in Iraq so that their headgear better protects them from the shock-waves generated by "improvised explosive devices" and other deadly threats - was founded by Dr. Bob Meaders, the other guest on C-SPAN's show today. He got the idea from his grandson, a Marine.

Entertainer to Urge Lawmakers for Upgraded Protective Gear
By Buck Wolf
June 13, 2006 — Cher can't turn back time, but she can go to Washington to plea for better helmet lining for U.S. troops in Iraq.
The 60-year-old Oscar-winning entertainer will appear Thursday before the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Tactical Air and Land Forces with Dr Bob Meaders, the founder of Operation Helmet, a nonprofit group that supplies helmet upgrade kits.

| CHER'S WAR: HELMET SAFETY FOR TROOPS |
|
While you were sleeping in Memorial Day weekend, Cher was fighting for American troops on C-SPAN. The legendary singer called into "Washington Journal" early Sunday morning -- 4:20 a.m. her time, to be exact.
"Hello? This is Malibu, California. I'm going to try to be really calm while I'm talking about this . . ." and she launched into a passionate argument for helmet safety upgrades for troops and her frustration with the government for not providing them to every soldier. Host Steve Scully recognized her famously husky voice.

Rita Braver Looks At The Designs Of Celebrity Homes
(CBS) Enter the home of Cher and you are immediately awestruck by the view of the Pacific Ocean and the fact that Cher decided to set a Venetian style Palazzo right smack in Malibu, according to her long time designer Ron Wilson.
Though Wilson and Architect Wallace Tutt took care of getting the work done, completed just a year ago, Cher was involved in every aspect of deciding how the 16,000 square foot home would look. There's also the front courtyard, with its dramatic tile fountain inspired by one Cher saw on a trip to Italy, notes CBS Sunday Morning contributor Rita Braver.

EVEN I, who knew her best, who sat in judgement of so many faults, never once could fault her innate intelligence nor her soldier's courage to act upon her hatred of Hitler ... my mother seemed to actually feel the evil about to destroy the land of her birth, the same evil that would forever change the concept of humanity ... for that she truly deserves to be remembered."
