News: CHER TURNS BACK TIME IN FAREWELL GIG

CherIT TOOK just 90 minutes last night for Cher to run through 40 years' worth of memories and hits and send her fans home happy.

Her Farewell Tour signals her retirement at the age of 57 from punishing world tours. She's been on the road with the current one for two years, resulting in a slick and tightly choreographed show. After the opener - U2's I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For - Cher joked that she'd wondered whether she could compete with younger rivals like Britney and Christina, before deciding that she could.

"Follow this," she said - the cue for an unstoppable run of greatest hits.

The Shoop Shoop Song, Love Hurts, Walking in Memphis, I Found Someone, Strong Enough, If I Could Turn Back Time and All Or Nothing were delivered with panache.

Cher donned 60s hippy gear for a medley of her earliest hits, such All I Really Want To Do, Half Breed, Gypsies Tramps and Thieves, and Dark Lady, while Bang Bang was delivered via video footage of her and Sonny Bono.

The show had much that caught the eye, but the frequent gaps for costume changes meant it didn't flow as it ought to have done.

There was also too much reliance on footage of Cher's old chat-shows, film clips when the fans might have preferred more of the real thing. And the souvenirs were pricey - programmes were £15, hooded tops £50 and caps £25.

Cher encored with I Believe and gestured her farewell to fans before disappearing. It was a solemn end to a night of glittering pop nostalgia.

The gaps for costume changes were great. There was not one time where nothing was happening.
